E‑Learning Resource for Support Workers

Lead organisation:

Family Drug Support Aotearoa New Zealand

Family Drug Support Aotearoa New Zealand is developing a nationwide, evidence-based e-learning package to strengthen the capability of Peer Support, Lived Experience, and Support Worker staff who assist family/whānau affected by a loved one’s alcohol or other drug use. The online resource will offer accessible, inclusive training through self-paced modules, self-assessment tools, and certification, enabling workers across Aotearoa to access consistent, high-quality professional development regardless of location.

Research by Family Drug Support has shown that around 40% of New Zealanders are impacted by a relative or friend’s substance use, highlighting the need for effective, evidence-based resources to support families/whānau. With an estimated 10–12 people affected for every individual experiencing substance use challenges, the initiative addresses a significant service gap.

Co-designed with lived experience representatives and grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, the resource aims to lift capability and confidence across the mental health and addiction vocational workforce. Improved worker preparation will contribute to more consistent service delivery, enhanced coping and resilience among families, stronger support networks, and better wellbeing outcomes for both families and the people using alcohol and other drugs themselves.

The initiative will also build long-term sustainability by providing a scalable, reusable online tool that can continue to meet evolving workforce development needs.
